Incandescent lamps remain the most widely used source of light in the world, especially in the home. With its vast array of shapes and colours, its wide range of applications, and its warm light, the incandescent lamp is very much still with us. Its relatively low cost and excellent colour reproduction have contributed much to its popularity. However, the downside to these advantages is high energy consumption and a short average lifespan of 1,000 operating hours. As “heat emitters”, about 95% of the electricity supplied is converted into radiant heat – the portion of visible light is very small. Before using these lamps, check whether legal regulations restrict their use.
